Why I prefer to take my own nail polish to the salon!

Why I prefer to take my own nail polish to the salon!

I am not ashamed in taking in my own nail polish to the salon. After all, I am personally at comfort to know that my health is being sustained.

Predominantly here’s why. The nail polish I use does NOT contain Toluene, Phthalates or Formaldehyde. Hmmm? Is Rose using too many big words? Lol; those words simply represent chemicals that are contained in some popular polishes that are VERY BAD for us. Ever hear that cliché saying “do not polish your nails whilst pregnant”? Well Phthalates is known to cause birth defects!!! Yikes!!!

The idea of nail polish as a risky substance gained traction in 2006 when public health advocates began a nationwide protest concerning three compounds; often referred to as “the toxic trio” —    in leading nail polish brands.

Janet Nudelman, co-founder of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, an advocacy group, said the concern was that trace amounts of these materials would be absorbed through the skin or nail or that vapors would be inhaled. “No one is saying that occasional application of nail polish will cause long-term health consequences,” she said. But certain groups may be at higher risk.

Get to know more about these ingredients:

(1)   Phthalates (DBP, DMP, DEP)

Found in Perfumes, Hair Spray, and Deodorants, and used as plasticizers and fixatives, most common forms of Phthalates are Dimethylphthalate, Diethylphthalate, and Dibutylphthalate, and are often times undisclosed on mainstream product labels. Phthalates have been found to cause birth defects in male reproductive systems, pre-mature sexual development in girls and increased child asthma rates. Exposure to phthalates has also caused malformations of male reproductive organs and damage to the prostate glands in animal laboratory tests. They have been linked to breast cancer since 1997.

(2)   Formaldehyde

Also used as a preservative, Formaldehyde can irritate the skin, damages the nervous system and cause cancer. 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1, 3-Diol, Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea, and Quaternium 15 all either contain, may release, or may break down into formaldehyde.

(3)   Toluene /ˈtɒluːiːn/, formerly known as toluol /ˈtɒluːɒl/, is a clear, water-insoluble liquid with the typical smell of paint thinners.

It is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is widely used as an industrial feedstock and as a solvent. Like other solvents, toluene is sometimes also used as an inhalant drug for its intoxicating properties; however, inhaling toluene has potential to cause severe neurological harm] Toluene is an important organic solvent, but is also capable of dissolving a number of notable inorganic chemicals such as sulfur, iodine, bromine, phosphorus, and other non-polar covalent substances.

One teeny nail polish bottle holds all of that toxic, harmful chemicals, so please consider buying and taking in your non-toxic brand of polish.
